Dr. Irene Topor

Project Director

After 44 years in the field of visual impairment including 27 years preparing teachers to instruct students with visual impairments at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Dr. Irene Topor retires from personnel preparation.  Her interests targeted how low vision students of any age, including those with multiple impairments, use their vision to learn through the functional vision assessment and instruction process.   Dr. Topor returns to work on the new U of A VI National Science Foundation, Project-Based Learning Opportunities and Exploration of Mentorship for Students with Visual Impairments in STEM (Project POEM) as project based learning and mentor director.   Her hobbies include providing herself and others with an exercise regimen that includes cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility workouts as a certified personal trainer and taking her yellow Labrador Retriever dog, Ruby, to pet therapy visits at the U of A, local libraries, and homes for those in assisted living.
